WARRIOR—The Warrior City Council last Monday voted to spend $6,390.44 to purchase 12 new radio units for the police department and a base that works on the 800 frequency used by the county and other area police and fire departments. The move will improve communications among the nearby jurisdictions by making it easier to communicate.
The city had previously looked at upgrading the radios, but the costs were extremely high. This price is make possible by a program Sheriff Mike Hale has offered to jurisdictions like Warrior that do not have the same radios as the county. Warrior Mayor Johnny Ragland and members of the council commended the sheriff on making the radio systems available.
The council also discussed a property on Main Street that is overgrown. Ragland said he was frustrated with trying to get the owners to clean it up and has had no luck getting them to return phone calls. The property was foreclosed on by Compass Bank and has not been maintained. Mayor Pro Tem Jackie Hudson Wesson suggested the city move forward with cleaning the property up and then assessing a lien against it for the cost. That will prevent the bank from selling the property until they pay the lien.
In other business, the council:
•approved extending the time of the current seasonal employee through October, instead of just September.
•approved spending $2,200 to join the Jefferson County Hazardous Waste Program that would enable residents to dispose of materials not allowed to be picked up by regular trash or taken to the area landfills.
•approved a program contract with United Way of Central Alabama for the senior center.
•discussed the possibility of looking into converting the old tennis courts that are not being used into additional parking for the city’s library and senior center. The city does not own the land and is looking into who has control over the land.
•rescheduled the next regular meeting to September 6 at regular time, due to the Labor Day holiday.
