A new chapter begins in Cullman’s cultural life when the curtain rises for a resurgent community theatre production of “The Music Man.”

Based on the Tony Award winning play from 1957, and film in 1962, The Music Man is providing 70 or more Cullman area residents an opportunity to use their talents, whether as singers and dancers, or behind the scenes stage hands and set designers.

Under the direction of Wayne Cook, who led Cullman High School’s theatre performers to the state’s top award in 2017, and many other talented artists, the revival of community theatre comes at an appropriate time for the community.

In recent years, the quality and appeal of festivals and other events has grown by leaps and bounds. The rise of Cullman’s livability and status as a destination for visitors will be complimented by establishing a strong community theatre scene. The arts bring a level of sophistication and credibility to a community that makes it more attractive as a home, a destination, and a place to invest.

For those who live here, theatre is an opportunity to shine, to use skills that otherwise have to be taken out of town to utilize.

Today is the unveiling of weeks of rehearsal by a group of people ranging from ages 4 to 70.

Cindy Pass, who is musical director for the performance, noted that the show promises to be great family entertainment and equally appealing for those who’ve never been involved in theatre.

The concept of community theatre is to provide not only entertainment, but a chance for a wide range of people to get involved with something new and challenging.

The performances today at Cullman High School are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., followed by a single matinee Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
