Hanceville officials estimate it will cost up to $1,200 to repair and replace property that was damaged and stolen sometime last week at the city’s C.W. Day Park.
Someone cut in half the rubber seats to swings at the park’s swing sets, rendering them useless, and vandalized a number of cooking grills at the park’s picnic area. One grill was stolen.
Mayor Kenneth Nail said a motive for the crime appears to have been a combination of greed and mischief. “The swings — that’s just somebody who wants to tear up things,” he said. “The grill they stole, I think they must have stolen to sell for scrap iron.”
Nail said the city will restore what was lost and damaged, at an estimated cost of between $800 and $1,200. Hanceville resident Eric Gibson has started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the effort.
