Juanita Culler and Good Hope City Councilman Maxie Jones hold an example of a banner that local families can purchase to honor a veteran who was killed in action, missing in action or a prisoner of war. The City of Hanceville has signed onto the program.

HANCEVILLE — Hanceville residents will soon have a new way to publicly honor the city’s veterans and fallen service members, thanks to a city council action Thursday.

The council approved use of the city’s street posts as display anchors for new, privately purchased banners, each intended to commemorate an individual local veteran.

The decision came following a pre-meeting presentation from Juanita Culler of Arley, who first spearheaded the popular banner program in her Winston County town in 2016. The move represents neither a financial benefit nor liability to the city; rather, it merely authorizes public property to be used as a display mount for the banners.

Each banner measures 24”x48” and features a picture and description of a local veteran. The City of Good Hope adopted the same program at its June meeting.

City personnel will be responsible for mounting and removing the banners during designated periods throughout the year. The $125 cost for each banner is paid by the private citizen who wishes to sponsor it.
