Alcohol ordinance change gets second reading

GOOD HOPE — An amendment to the City of Good Hope’s alcohol ordinance will be up for a vote at its next meeting.

The Good Hope City Council held the second reading of the amendment at its meeting Monday night.

In the amended ordinance, the distance required between a property authorized for on-premises alcohol sale or off-premises sale would be reduced from the current 1,200 feet from a church or school to 700 feet.

The council will vote on the amended ordinance July 9.

In other business, the council held a public hearing for and approved an ordinance that rezones the property on which AGCOR Steel will build its new facility. The ordinance changed the zoning of the land from Ag-1 to M-1.

AGCOR — a manufacturer and retailer of metal siding and metal trusses currently located in Vinemont — will be building will be keeping its 25 current jobs and adding 25 more to the area once it moves to the 46-acre tract of land located on Industrial Park Road.

The City Council first approved an agreement to bring AGCOR to the city in March, and the new facility will be the first manufacturing plant for the city.

The council also discussed a resolution to allow Kendig Keast Collaborative to continue in its overhaul of Good Hope’s zoning ordinance.

The council previously approved an agreement with the consulting firm to review the city’s zoning ordinance, and the new resolution would let the firm begin the first step in a four-part plan to create better organized and more user-friendly zoning ordinances for the city. 

After a discussion of the agreement, the council voted to table the resolution until some of the wording of the plan could be clarified.
