- Jones Chapel storm
Storms left a family of three injured in the Sardis community near West Point, while others dealt with damaged structures and power outages after at least seven sirens sounded tornado warnings Friday evening in Cullman County.
The injuries occurred at a mobile home occupied by a mother and two young children next door to Cullman County Emergency Management Agency Director Phyllis Little, who was unable to leave her home because of damage caused by the first wave of storms that struck the West Point/Jones Chapel Sardi area.
Warnings then sounded until 8:30 p.m. as reports of funnel clouds reached from South Vinemont to Baileyton, Fairview and Holly Pond before the system moved out of the county.
“The family next door to me has been taken to the hospital. Their home is gone,” Little said. “I was unable to leave home because of the damage around.”
Little said the damage in her area occurred between County Roads 1091 and 1114.
Scott McDonald, Little’s assistant director at EMA, reported damage was significant to structures along Blair Road in the Sardis community that is nestled between West Point and Jones Chapel in the west side of the county.
“We’re trying to assess the damage around the area, but that will go into the morning before we know everything,” McDonald said. “Phyllis reported seeing a funnel cloud, but can’t confirm it touched down at this time.”
The National Weather Service also reported a tornado touch down in the Fairview area before the storm system finally exited the county.
Brian Lacy of the Cullman Electric Cooperative reported than 500 residences were without power, mostly in the West Point to Jones Chapel area.
The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office sent an alert at night to avoid County Roads 1114 and 1107 because of trees and power lines down.
No other reports of injuries or damage were available.
