- Jordan Lee shows off his haul on Day 1 of the 2018 Bassmaster Classic. Lee won the inaugural Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour title on Sunday.
Nice to see you again, summer.
The past four months have been extremely hectic around these parts — my sleep schedule agrees — but also rife with superb individual and team achievements.
But before we turn the proverbial page, let’s recap some of the most memorable moments from the spring.
There are plenty.
BACK-TO-BACK
Jordan Lee made some serious waves in the fishing world in March.
Again.
The Cullman graduate captured a three-day total of 47 pounds, 1 ounce at South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell to claim his second straight Bassmaster Classic title at the age of 26.
Along with a spiffy $300,000 check, Lee became just the third person to win back-to-back Classics, joining fellow anglers Rick Clunn and Kevin VanDam in the exclusive club.
Lee, who won the 2017 event at Texas’ Lake Conroe, held off Brent Ehrler (46-1) for this year’s crown.
MAKING A POINT
West Point’s baseball team delivered a season to remember this spring.
The Warriors amassed their fourth Cullman County Baseball Tournament title since 2011, racked up a spot in the Class 5A playoffs for the first time since 2003 and won their first-ever postseason series following an opening-round sweep against Pleasant Grove.
West Point’s softball team, on the other had, dominated the competition once again to corral their fifth consecutive Cullman County Softball Tournament crown.
AWESOME RUNS
St. Bernard corralled the Red Map trophy at this year’s Class 1A-3A state track and field meet in Cullman.
The Class 2A Lady Saints held off LaFayette, Falkville and Cold Springs — among countless others — to notch the program’s first-ever top-two performance at a state track and field meet.
Leahrose Mami picked up four gold medals for St. Bernard (800-meter run, 1,600-meter run, 3,200-meter run and 4×800-meter relay) to cap off her sensational prep career with 23 total medals.
St. Bernard’s Andrew Sweeney collected three gold medals as well to wrap up his nice prep career.
Addison’s softball team also put together a solid run of its own.
The Lady Bulldogs won the Class 1A, Area 12 Tournament before securing the title at the Class 1A North Central Regional Tournament in Tuscaloosa to snare a state berth for the first time since 2014. They then won two games in Montgomery and were one of the final four teams left standing in their classification.
Cullman’s baseball program, meanwhile, crafted its 18th straight playoff appearance and advanced to the semifinals for the fifth straight season before being upended by eventual Class 6A state champion Hazel Green.
RECORD-BREAKING ATHLETES
What do Addison’s Emee Baldwin and West Point’s Hunter Appling have in common?
They’re both proud new owners of state records in their respective classifications.
Baldwin shattered the Class 1A pole vault record — a 10-00 set in 2015 — with a leap of 10-08. The UAH signee also set the Class 2A pole vault record (9-06) back in 2016 as a sophomore.
Appling, meanwhile, turned in a record-breaking performance of his own in Gulf Shores.
The South Alabama signee broke the 110-meter hurdles record in Class 5A with a speedy time of 14.10, besting the 14.13 mark set by Athens’ Zek Parker in 1997. He also finished first in the 300-meter hurdles (38.36) to cap off a wonderful prep career with six gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal.
But Appling’s spring didn’t stop there.
He crafted wins in the 100-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles in addition to anchoring his team’s first-place effort in the 4×100-meter relay at the Cullman County Track and Field meet en route to taking home MVP honors for the second straight year.
Meek’s John Mark Abercrombie (186-07) also broke the state record (173-02) in the Class 2A javelin.
