HANCEVILLE — The Hanceville City Council has added another round of local streets to its list of summer paving projects, after awarding bids earlier this month for an initial round of paving work on the city’s east side.
The council approved four paving projects totaling $50,975 at its regular meeting Thursday, signing off on road resurfacing for a portion of Shady Lane from Alabama Highway 91 to the city limits; Sunnyside Drive, which connects Commercial Street with Shady Lane; Edmondson Road East from the rail crossing to the city limits; and East Railroad Avenue from Edmondson Road to Edwards Street.
In a cost-saving move aimed at stretching its limited paving budget, the city will employ the same microsurfacing technique used by the Cullman County Commission to extend the life of local roadways, such as the portion of Alabama Highway 69 near Good Hope that received the treatment last year.
Mayor Kenneth Nail said the work along Edmondson Road should go more smoothly now that the city has finished a separate sidewalk project.
“We’d been waiting a few extra days to get started on it, because we’ve just now finished making the last pour on new sidewalks for Edmondson Road, “ Nail explained. “Now we’ll be able to blend the road paving into the new sidewalk concrete, which I think is going to look nice.”
In addition to the four microsurfacing projects, the council already has approved asphalt paving projects for a portion of Edmondson Road connecting Blountsville Street with the rail crossing near West Railroad Avenue; Linda Warren Circle; and an apron attached to Section Line Road near its intersection with U.S. Highway 31.
In other business at its regular meeting, the council:
Approved payment of a $12,800 repair bill to the Cullman County Commission for work done on a city-owned track hoe by the county road department.
Surplussed a city-owned bulldozer for sale on govdeals.com, setting a reserve of $45,000.
Tabled until the next regular meeting a measure to sell a small portion of city-owned land in order to allow legal ownership of the property to match its current use. The city plans to solicit an estimate on the value of the land before it again takes up the matter.
Approved the purchase of a $100 advertisement in support of the Hanceville High School cheerleading team for publication in an upcoming athletics program.
