West Elementary faculty, students earn praise

The state’s education standards can change often, but West Elementary School’s principal says his school is doing a good job of keeping pace.

West Elementary Principal Jay Page gave a presentation to the Cullman City School Board Monday night about some of the work that faculty and students have done over the past year and some of the school’s future goals.

Page presented the school’s ALSDE school report card results, and said West Elementary was one of only three schools in the county to receive an A- score, joining Cullman Middle School and East Elementary.

“We’re extremely proud of that,” he said.

A large part of the school’s success is due to the faculty and staff, who have worked to meet any new standards that are given to them by the state, Page said.

“I can’t say enough about what they did and what they’ve done,” he said.

Page said the school’s students have also done a good job responding to the standards and have performed well on tests.

“Our students have really stepped up,” he said.

Schools are moving more and more towards individualized paths for students, and one of the school’s goals is to let students become more involved in tracking their progress.

To follow that goal, the school has already begun letting students lead their own conferences with parents, he said.

The goal is to let students understand the standards that they are supposed to be meeting and be actively involved in what they are doing and why they are doing it, Page said.

The school has begun using the #weststory hashtag, which allows parents and the rest of the community to follow along with the progress that students have made over the school year, Page said.

“We’re very proud of our school,” he said. “I can’t say enough about the faculty.”
