PREP SPORTS: St. Bernard’s Mami named Athlete of the Week

Published 5:54 pm Wednesday, May 9, 2018

St. Bernard's Leahrose Mami.

Leahrose Mami’s high school career came to an end at last Saturday’s Class 1A-3A state track and field meet.

But not before she put the finishing touches on her prep résumé.

The outstanding St. Bernard senior crafted four gold medals inside Cullman’s Oliver Woodard Stadium to help propel the Lady Saints to a runners-up finish behind Altamont in Class 2A.

It was the program’s first-ever top-two performance at a state track and field meet.

Mami netted victories in the 800-meter run (2:29.24), 1,600-meter run (5:34.32) and 3,200-meter run (12:14.97) in addition to comprising one leg of the 4×800-meter relay team — along with Adrian Smith, Claire Sanders and Eva Barck — that also finished first with a speedy time of 10:52.72.

In doing so, the Alabama signee became just the second athlete in school history (Will Faulk in 2013) to snare four gold medals at a single state track and field meet. Mami snagged 11 gold medals, eight silver medals and four bronze medals in total during her track and field tenure with the Lady Saints.

There’s no question … Mami is The Times’ Athlete of the Week.

Several other track and field standouts also delivered awesome performances at their respective state meets.

West Point’s Hunter Appling set a new state record in the 5A 110-meter hurdles with a 14.10 effort. The senior also picked up another gold in the 300-meter hurdles (38.36) to finish his career with six golds, two silvers and one bronze. Appling is headed to South Alabama.

Addison’s Emee Baldwin scored her second state record following a 10-08 leap in the 1A pole vault. The UAH signee also owns the 2A pole vault record, set back in 2016, with a jump of 9-06.

St. Bernard’s Andrew Sweeney also recorded three gold medals in his final meet with the Saints. He dominated the 1,600-meter run (4:35.18) and 3,200-meter run (10:18.18) in addition to offering his help in the 4×800-meter relay (8:46.06). Caleb Guthery, Joey McCarthy and Joseph Arriaga made up the rest of the gold-medal group.

Sweeney, like Baldwin, is also headed to UAH after graduation.

Cold Springs’ Grace Chambers (100-07 in 2A discus), Cullman’s Caroline Hollingsworth (5-04 in 6A high jump) and St. Bernard’s Elijah Price (6-02 in 2A high jump) rounded out the local gold medal recipients.

Athlete of the Week, which is sponsored by Mitch Smith Chevrolet, is open to all local athletes.
