A proposed ordinance to strengthen the city’s leverage in addressing owners of dilapidated buildings and homes gained the Cullman Planning Commission’s recommendation Monday.
The ordinance update was introduced in April by the City Council and matches state codes or recommendations on procedures for addressing derelict buildings.
“I’ve reviewed this. Basically it gives the City of the Cullman the right to remove dangerous buildings from our city and under Alabama Code,” said City Attorney Roy Williams. “It clearly sets out the rights of the city for enforcement of the codes. Property owners have numerous right to be heard under, and it’s important for the citizens to have that right and what the council wants.”
Building Inspector Rick Fulmer said the new ordinance will cut out going through various sections of state law and place all aspects into one ordinance.
The City Council is expected to vote on the proposed ordinance 2018-27 at the May 14 meeting.
