STATE TRACK AND FIELD MEET: Addison’s Baldwin sets pole vault record; Lady Saints remain in contention for title

Hanceville’s Kierra Merriweather and Vinemont’s Emily Cheatwood race in the 100-meter hurdles.

Day 1 of the Class 1A-3A state track and field meet is history.

And what an exceptional day is was for Addison’s Emee Baldwin, who made some history of her own inside Cullman’s Oliver Woodard Stadium.

The senior standout shattered the Class 1A pole vault record — the previous mark of 10-00 was set back in 2015 — with a tremendous leap of 10-08 to secure her second state record in the past three years.

Baldwin, a UAH signee, also set the 2A pole vault record (9-06) back in 2016 as a sophomore.

Not too shabby.

“I’m super pleased with my performance,” Baldwin said. “I’m super excited to close out my last year strong. But I couldn’t be here without my coaches helping me, my family supporting me, and God giving the ability.”

St. Bernard’s girls are within striking distance of the 2A title following a wonderful day from Leahrose Mami and others. The former collected a first-place showing in the 1,600-meter run (5:34.32) and comprised one leg of the program’s 4×800-meter relay team — along with Adrian Smith, Eva Barck and Claire Sanders — that also snagged a goal medal with a speedy time of 10:52.72.

The Lady Saints (34) trail Altamont (50) and Falkville (36) entering Saturday’s events. Cold Springs (25) is tied for fifth with Lanett.

St. Bernard’s Andrew Sweeney also took home the gold medal in the 1,600-meter run (4:35.18) and helped the school’s 4×800-meter relay group — which includes Caleb Guthery, Joseph Arriaga and Joey McCarthy — best a talented field with a fine time of (8:46.06).

The Saints are in third place with 23 points but well back of Falkville (60) and Altamont (40). Cold Springs, which has notched two straight 2A state titles, is tied for fourth (16) with LaFayette and Aliceville.

The 1A-3A state meet will resume Saturday at 8 a.m. and wrap up later in the afternoon, weather permitting.
