PREP SPORTS: Cullman’s Finch, Johnson, Dueland, Glasscock, Whitney sign scholarships

The walls of Tillman Hall have seen a bevy of athletes turn their dreams into realities over the past few years.

On Wednesday afternoon, five more exceptional Cullman seniors signed respective National Letters of Intent in the valued company of family, friends, coaches, teammates and administrators.

Dylan Finch

% Sport: Basketball

% School: Wallace State

% Career Highlights: 937 points (10.4 per game) and 698 rebounds (7.8 per game) in 90 career games.

% What They Said: “It’s super exciting and a big relief to get this out of the way. I’m ready to meet the guys, work with them, improve every day and pursue bigger things after that. I think it’s a great program. I also get to stay close to all my friends and family, too.” — Dylan Finch

% Coach Speak: “He’s been a productive player at his position. He helped us win an area championship as a 10th-grader. He’s basically been a double-double guy with his rebounding and scoring. Valuable. You can build a team around a guy who can give you that solid play. He’s been one of our backbones, and we’ve won a lot of games with him. I think he’ll be an asset at Wallace State. He’ll work hard and produce down the line.” — Bobby Meyer


Emily Johnson

% Sport: Track and Field

% School: Auburn University

% Career Highlights: All-American in hammer throw. Four-time United States Track and Field (USTAF) Junior Olympics  qualifier in hammer throw and discus throw. Three-time USTAF South Region champion in hammer throw. Four-time USTAF state champion in hammer throw. Four-time All-Section in discus. Three-time section champion in discus. Finished second in Class 6A state meet in discus in 2017. Has 23 gold medals, 14 silver medals and six bronze medals.

% What They Said: “I’m super excited to challenge myself and push myself at the next level. I’m hoping the coaches at Auburn can push me beyond what I can do now. I’m also really thankful for my dad and everything my family has done for me. I wouldn’t be here without them.” — Emily Johnson

% Coach Speak: “I’m very proud of her. We got into the hammer throw during the summer leagues. She fell in line with her brother. Of course, she’s a lot better (laughs). She’s just naturally gifted at it.” — Larry Johnson


David Dueland

% Sport: Fishing

% School: University of Montevallo

% Career Highlights: Helped team win the B.A.S.S. Nation Smith Lake Regional Tournament and B.A.S.S. Nation High State Championship at Lake Eufaula in 2017. Helped team win the B.A.S.S. Nation Guntersville Lake Regional Tournament in 2018. Finished ninth at the Smith Lake Regional Tournament (2017) and 11th at the Wheeler Lake Regional Tournament (2017).

% What They Said: “It’s a really cool day for me. I want to thank my coach, my mom and dad and everyone at the school. I also want to thank God, because He led me in this direction. This is what I was looking for when I was a freshman. I was fishing every day and trying to learn every lake. I finally did it.” — David Dueland

% Coach Speak: “I’ve had David for six years with football and fishing. A great kid who works hard. He’s become an anchor to our team. As solid of an angler we’ve ever had at Cullman.” — Kyle Morris


Cameron Glasscock

% Sport: Fishing

% School: University of Montevallo

% Career Highlights: Helped team win the B.A.S.S. Nation Smith Lake Regional Tournament and B.A.S.S. Nation High State Championship at Lake Eufaula in 2017. Helped team win the B.A.S.S. Nation Guntersville Lake Regional Tournament in 2018. Finished sixth at the B.A.S.S. National High School State Championship (2015), fourth at the B.A.S.S. National High School State Championship (2017) and sixth at the Guntersville Lake Regional Tournament (2018). Finished 10th in the B.A.S.S. National Angler of the Year standings in 2017.

% What They Said: “It’s pretty cool we all get to go down there together. I didn’t think I’d be holding a fishing scholarship. I’m grateful to everyone at Cullman who helped push me. And my mom and dad.” — Cameron Glasscock

% Coach Speak: “He’s been one of our rocks. He’s been as elite of an angler as we’ve had in this area. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do at the next level.” — Kyle Morris


 

 

Garrett Whitney

% Sport: Fishing

% School: University of Montevallo

% Career Highlights: Three top-100 finishes.

% What They Said: “I’m really excited, because I get to go down there with my friends. I’m excited to further my career. I never thought this would happen. Fishing wasn’t a big sport four years ago, but it’s grown. I’m just glad I’ve got the opportunity to fish at the next level.” — Garrett Whitney

% Coach Speak: “He’s been really strong. I’m really proud of what he’s done and who he’s been as an angler and a person. I’m looking forward to seeing him grow.” — Kyle Morris
