New Desperation Church site plan gets approval

Site plans for Desperation Church’s new facility on Third Avenue Southeast cleared the Cullman City Planning Commission.

No timetable has been publicly released about construction of the church, which owns more than 36 acres off of Third Avenue Southeast, south of 16th Street, according to Cullman County property records. Desperation Church outgrew its original location, opened in 2010 on Elizabeth Street across from Depot Park, and has held services in Cullman Civic Center over the past year. Services are also held at its campuses in Jasper and Arab.

On Monday, the planning commission approved a conditional use permit to allow the church to operate at the proposed site and its site plan, contingent on no traffic be allowed to use Kim Lane to enter or exit the church.

Cullman engineering firm St. John & Associates and Skipper Consultants have worked together to study the anticipated increase in traffic flow in the area and told the commission a turning lane would be added to allow traffic to safely access the new church. Mayor Woody Jacobs said the police department would likely coordinate with the church during service times to make sure traffic moves smoothly in and out of the area through Third Avenue Southeast, or Old Hanceville Highway.
