Cullman City Schools Support Services Coordinator Hayden Faulk speaks to the City School Board at a work session in September.

The Cullman City School Board has declared an emergency situation in order to facilitate repairs to the roof of West Elementary.

At a special-called meeting Monday afternoon, Support Services Coordinator Hayden Faulk said he estimated around 200 holes in the roof of the school from the hail on Monday night.

“It is extremely severe hail damage,” he said.

By declaring an emergency, the board authorized Superintendent Susan Patterson to proceed immediately with the repairs, per recommendation of the board architect.

The hail punched through the school’s skylights to the floor in several places, but there does not seem to be very much water damage, Faulk said.

The repairs are needed all over the school’s campus, with the metal roofs and awnings sustaining damage from the hail as well, he said.

The roof of East Elementary will also be checked for any damage, Faulk said.
