Caffey has been charged with two counts of robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, fourth-degree theft of property, attempting to elude, reckless endangerment, first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently book at the Cullman County Detention Center.

Long says officers had a driver’s license check point set up at the intersection of Alabama Highway 91 and County Road 747 Friday night.

Around 11 p.m., Long said a man drove up to the check point and didn’t show identification.

As officers attempted to get the man out of the car, he sped off. Officers fired several shots at the man’s vehicle in an attempt to disable it. The vehicle became disabled when both back tires were deflated and officers caught up to it. At that point, they realized the man had been hit by one of the bullets.

He was transported to UAB Hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries. The passenger in the vehicle was uninjured.

Caffey had warrants for possession of marijuana and a firearm prior to this incident. Long said Caffey is also a suspect in a robbery case from about four to six weeks ago in Hanceville.

Caffey was arrested in January 2016 after the Hanceville Special Operations Group (SOG) executed a search warrant at Hanceville Village Apartments. Officers said they recovered $207 in cash, approximately 2 oz. of marijuana, a set of digital scales and 50 rounds of handgun ammunition.

He was charged with two counts of distribution of a controlled substance, first degree unlawful possession of marijuana for other than personal use, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In November 2012, Caffey was charged with the attempted murder of Francisco Avilez Ortiz, 20, of Cullman. He was convicted on a reduced charge of first degree assault.
