- The future home of UAB in Gardendale, slated to open in early 2019, is currently under construction. A developer is now looking at creating a retail space adjacent to the medical center.
The Gardendale City Council on Monday approved a sales agreement with Cahaba Capital Real Estate for the approximately 14 acres that the city currently owns adjacent to the future home of UAB on Mt. Olive Road.
The agreement is for $1.9 million for the approximately 14 acres. The developer then has 150 days to present the council with a development plan for the property that would have to be approved by the city.
The developer includes individuals who have been involved with drawing Publix, Moe’s and other businesses to the city, according to Mayor Stan Hogeland.
Hogeland said the company is looking at using the land for retail and restaurant buildings, and possibly even a theater.
The UAB medical facility will include state-of-the-art medical offices and a standalone emergency room to treat those in need of immediate assistance. The facility, slated to open in early 2019, is expected to draw additional business and individuals to the area.
The city and UAB have branded the facility a “game changer” for both healthcare in the area and the city’s future.
In other business, the council also:
•approved the installation of streetlights at Tarrant Road and New Castle Road intersection and in front of St. Vincent’s on Highway 31.
•hired Candice Burgess as a crossing guard.
•approved a settlement agreement related to a lawsuit against the city’s former private probation firm. The details of the settlement were not released. The city court system no longer uses the private probation service.
•approved budget amendments related to utilities and advertising. The general fund budget will be decreased by $8,658, with $3,858 going to utilities and $4800 going to advertising.
•approved a request for the Magnolia Festival 5K run on April 21.
