- West Point’s Carlie Wilkins delivers a pitch to the plate during the first inning of Tuesday’s contest.
WEST POINT — Carlie Wilkins tossed a beauty, and West Point’s varsity girls softball team tacked on a few late runs to secure a 5-0 home victory against Holly Pond on Tuesday night.
Wilkins’ complete-game outing (seven innings, six hits and four strikeouts) stifled the Lady Broncos long enough for the Lady Warriors to eventually add four crucial runs in a decisive sixth frame.
Olivia Ball turned a 1-0 lead — which held up for a long time — into a 3-0 advantage with a clutch home run before Makayla Brown plated Molly Pendley and Avery McClure with a smashed double four batters later. Pendley (double) and McClure (single) had each reached base with two outs to extend the inning.
Brown (two hits and two RBIs), Gracie Abbott (two hits), Ball (one hit and two RBIs), McClure (one hit), Pendley (one hit), Hope Shedd (one hit), Braelee Quinn (one hit) and Chasilyn Morrow (one hit) put up productive at-bats for the Maroon and White, who improved to 1-1 on the season.
Holly Pond garnered one hit apiece from Kolby Holcombe, Maddie Heatherly, Taylor Simmons, Kaylee Stallings, Lexy Smith and Lexi White in the tough loss.

% Cullman 1, Athens 1 (Girls): The Class 6A No. 5 Lady Bearcats played to a tie on Tuesday night.
Cullman (5-1-2) amassed its lone goal from Abby Branham. Addie Echols had the assist in the home tilt.
“We started sluggish and went down 1-0,” coach Jacob Brown said. “We came out harder in the second half to tie. Not the greatest game, but we will push on and keep working.”
% Cullman 1, Pelham 0: Washington Sheffield grabbed a second-half goal to send the No. 4 Bearcats to a thrilling win over the third-ranked and defending champion Panthers on Tuesday night.
Cullman, which lost to Pelham 2-0 in last year’s state final, improved to 6-1 with the road victory — and coach Casey Harbin couldn’t have been happier with the result.
“Pelham is the defending champion for a reason,” he said. “They are a skilled, high-pressure, physical team. We had to grind the game out in the end, so it was a big mental win for us.”
Miguel Tizapa contributed an assist to Sheffield’s goal.
