HANCEVILLE — As part of Hanceville’s ongoing effort to seek retail growth in the city’s slowly-developing downtown area, an informal committee of downtown business owners and merchants will meet with Cullman City Council member Garlan Gudger to learn a little about how its neighbor to the north has pursued the same goal.

Gudger will meet with members of Hanceville’s downtown committee Monday at a public meeting to talk what’s worked in Cullman and what its leaders are still learning about downtown redevelopment and growth. The public is invited to attend the 4 p.m. meeting, which will be held at Hanceville City Hall.

“The committee meets every month to share ideas and progress the city in a positive way, and talk about ways to bring more economic activity,” explained Hanceville City Clerk Tania Wilcox. “The idea is to promote local businesses and bring in more people to the downtown area, and Mr. Gudger has got good experience with that in Cullman.”

The collaboration was discussed at Hanceville’s most recent city council meeting, which otherwise featured a light agenda.

The council also took up the following business:

– Granted a permit for an annual 5k run for the Hanceville High School Math Team. The run will be held March 10.

– Reappointed Lucille Powell and Jerry Haynes to the Hanceville Zoning Board for three year terms.

– Discussed the 2017 Statement of Economic Interests Forms, which are due April 30.

– Approved monthly bills payable.

– Approved the minutes of the council’s Feb. 8 regular meeting.

The next council meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 8 at Hanceville City Hall. A public work session will be held at the same location at 6 p.m.
