PREP ROUNDUP: Cullman soccer downs West Morgan 5-2; Cold Springs, Fairview baseball earn season-opening wins

Cullman’s varsity boys soccer team picked up a 5-2 home win over West Morgan on Tuesday night.

But despite the Class 6A No. 4 Bearcats (3-1) taking care of business against the 1A-3A No. 3 Rebels, coach Casey Harbin couldn’t help but feel disappointed following the match.

“Poor outing,” he said. “Poor fundamentals. Poor first touches. Poor passing. With all due respect to West Morgan, this feels like a loss. That’s a team we needed to play. It’s a different kind of soccer than we have seen our first three matches. We look at the way we play, and it feels like we took a step back tonight.

“But it’s a win, and we’ll take it.”

Miguel Tizapa provided three goals, while Isaac Rodriguez had two. The former — along with Washington Sheffield — also notched two assists. Jaron Potter crafted three saves.

West Morgan took a quick 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the bout and held a 2-2 tie at the 26-minute mark, but Cullman buckled down the rest of the way to pull out the triumph.

“Our defensive pressure was better in the second half,” Harbin said. “That’s why they didn’t score.”

Cullman travels to Brewer on Monday.
