Old health department to be demolished

The old Cullman County Health Department will soon be no more.
On Tuesday, the Cullman County Commission declared surplus the building that sits across from the Folsom Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare and on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Fourth Avenue Northeast. The building has been used for storage in recent years and has been defunct since the current health department building opened on Logan Avenue Southwest.
Built in 1950, the health department was conveniently located across the old Cullman Hospital. No date has been officially announced yet for its demolition.
In other business Tuesday, the Cullman County Commission:
- Approved Jan. 23 meeting minutes, appropriations, expenditures, payroll, requisitions and all journal entries to be posted.
- Authorized chairman and EMA director to sign the State EMPG grant in the amount of $2,342.
- Authorized repairs to the weather siren at the Ag Center for $12,238. This City of Cullman is splitting the repair costs with the county.
- Tabled authorizing renewal of the RAVE message call system with AT&T with an annual cost $9,100.
- Authorized chairman to sign the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office K-9 grant in the amount of $24,000.
- Awarded professional services contract for consulting and engineering for the Recreational Trail Program grant for the Stoney Lonesome Park project.
- Adopted revised substance abuse, drug and alcohol policy for CARTS, updating it to include the four new illegal substances prohibited by the Federal Transit Administration.
- Authorized County Attorney Chad Floyd to dismiss two parties from the pending litigation against Republic Services.
- Approved requesting an Attorney General opinion.
- Authorized Capt.Tim McKoy to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Jasper police chief to allow a Jasper police officer to ride along and train with Cullman County Animal Control.
- Approved addendum to the video services agreement with BellSouth Telecommunications, LLC, doing business as AT&T Alabama. This extends the county’s agreement related to the 3 percent franchise fee for another 10 years.
- Approved changing the pay date for all county employees from Wednesday to Thursday.
- Approved the Brooks Place’s (the Cullman County Child Advocacy Center) request to use Sportsman Lake Park for the Safe Kid’s Expo April 14.
- Declared surplus an ice machine from the Cullman County Detention Center to be disposed of as scrap.
- Declared surplus various discarded office furniture, file cabinets and chairs stored in the courthouse basement to be sold as scrap or for disposal.
- Approved transfer of 2004 Ford Ranger from Sales Tax Office to the county commission with a payment of $3,000.
- Approved purchase of a security alert system for the courthouse from Response Technologies for $21,265.14, replacing the current outdated system.
- Approved purchase of a 2018 Ford all-wheel drive utility vehicle off the state bid list through Stivers Ford for the Sales Tax Office for $25,148.
- Approved $16,863 payment for emergency repairs to the sewer pumps at the Ag Center by Bark-Ley Plumbing Contractors. County Parks Director said the costs were split with neighboring SportsFit gym.
- Purchased truck-mounted one-man pothole patcher from the Alabama County Joint Bidding Program through Coblentz Equipment & Parts Co., Inc. for $209,721. County Engineer John Lang said this will be the county’s third one-man patcher and is part of the county’s goal to cut overhead costs with only one employee required to do the work instead of two.
- Declared surplus six 2018 Mack trucks from the Road Department to be auctioned by J.M. Wood.
- Extended bid for poly pipe to Bear Concrete, Inc. which currently has the contract.
- Extended bid of bituminous plant mix (product only) to Good Hope Contracting which currently has the contract.
The Cullman County Commission will hold a work session at 8:30 a.m., Feb. 27, 2018 at 8:30 a.m., followed by its meeting at 10 a.m.
