The 2017-18 prep basketball season is drawing to a close.

Fortunately for some, it’s not over quite yet.

Sub-regional outings are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday — winners will advance to their respective regional tournaments — and several local teams remain in the hunt for a state championship as they head into the critical win-or-go-home portion of the season.

Cold Springs, Fairview, Good Hope, Hanceville and West Point (girls) as well as Fairview, Good Hope, Hanceville, Holly Pond and St. Bernard (boys) all have an opportunity to advance to the Northwest Regional Tournament at Wallace State with wins..

Cullman’s boys and girls, meanwhile, would move on to the Northeast Regional Tournament at Jacksonville State with victories.

The Class 3A No. 5 Broncos (27-3) and 5A No. 10 Lady Aggies (22-7) sport the area’s best records along with an extremely impressive pair of résumés that include county and area tournament titles.

Those two teams will join Cold Springs (girls), Fairview (boys), Good Hope (girls), Hanceville (boys) and St. Bernard (boys) as hosts of sub-regional affairs, while Cullman (boys), Cullman (girls), Good Hope (boys), Hanceville (girls) and West Point (girls) will hit the road after finishing runners-up in their respective area tournaments.

Dates and times for most meetings have been set, although some could undergo last-minute changes.
