Cullman attorney Alex Chaney has announced he will seek the Republican nomination for the District 12 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives.

A partner in the local law firm of Berry, Berry, Little, Brunner and Chaney, Chaney maintains a general practice in State and Federal Courts, and handles civil, criminal, divorce, juvenile and probate cases. He also is a certified mediator, and is licensed by the State of Alabama as a qualified Guardian Ad Litem in cases involving minors.

Chaney’s interest in representing the Cullman area, he says, flows from his family’s deep roots here. A fifth generation Cullman native, Chaney is the son of District Judge Kim Chaney and Maureen Chaney, a retired local school teacher. His grandparents, Jim and Jean Ann Owen Chaney, operated the former Chaney’s Seed and Feed in Cullman.

In addition to his family’s strong community ties, Chaney says his bid for state office also is about ensuring the Cullman area preserves, well into the future, the conservative values that helped it become one of the state’s most desirable places to live and raise a family.

“We are at an important crossroads in this state and country, and I think we need to remember the importance of true conservative values as we move forward,” he explained. “Christians are coming under attack, and we must work to protect our rights under the Second Amendment, and to protect the rights of the unborn.”

As a state representative, Chaney says he’ll focus on increasing employment and improving infrastructure throughout Cullman County, while also fighting to ensure his home community isn’t damaged by outside special interests.

“As your representative for District 12, I will fight to represent all the people of Cullman County and will not be influenced by political PACs and other special interest groups,” he said. “I will work every day to promote the conservative values of this community, and make sure Cullman remains a good and safe place to live, work and raise our families. I respectfully ask for the people of Cullman’s prayers, support and vote.”

A Cullman native, Chaney graduated from Cullman High School before attending the University of Alabama, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in three years. He then attended the Thomas Jones School of Law in Montgomery, where he earned his Juris Doctorate Degree.

During law school, Chaney worked for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals with Judge Liles Burke and Judge Michael Joiner. He also worked with the State of Alabama Legislative Service, which researches and drafts proposed legislation for the Alabama Legislature.

Since returning to Cullman, Chaney has become active in the local GOP, having been elected to serve as vice president of the Cullman County Republican Party, and member-at-large on the State of Alabama Republican Party Executive Committee.

Incumbent Corey Harbison has already qualified. The deadline to qualify as a Republican or Democratic candidate is 5 p.m., Friday. Primaries will be June 5, with a runoff scheduled for July 17 and the general election Nov. 6.
