Gardendale takes next step in commercial development

The Gardendale City Council on Tuesday surplussed the 29 properties between Odum Road and I-65 that is slated to be developed into commercial properties.

The council surplussing the items was the last step before the removal can begin.

The properties have been vacant since they were purchased and the roads through the neighborhood are also closed.

No deadline has been announced to begin removal of the buildings on the properties. Eventually, the city hopes to build a shopping mall with spaces for eateries.

In other business, the council:

•announced the city’s leaf service will conclude on Jan 31. After that, only bagged leaves will be picked up.

•declared January Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

•appointed Bill Noble to the Planning and Zoning Board.

•hired Angelica Hicks as administrative clerk in administration.

•promoted Jacob Daniel Wallace to heavy equipment operator.

•hired Kyle Thomas as unskilled laborer.
