Cullman will soon have another sandwich shop to dine at, and this one delivers.

Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is set to open on U.S. 31 and Arnold Street in coming weeks, possibly by the end of February, according to building department records. Underwood Investments is developing the property across from AutoZone, with commercial retail specialists ACT Construction, with offices in Lewisville, Texas and Racine, Wisconsin, renovating the existing building.

City building department records show the project is estimated to cost $280,000.

Jimmy John’s is famous for serving deli sandwiches made with locally purchased produce and all-natural meat that are both hand-sliced daily and piled atop fresh baked bread. The company’s commitment freshness includes serving customers sandwiches on French bread within four hours of it being baked.

There are location across Alabama, including Birmingham, Decatur, Florence, Gadsden, Hoover, Huntsville and Madison.

The sandwich chain was founded in 1983 by 19-year-old Jimmy John Liautaud with $25,000 borrowed from his father and the promise that if it didn’t turn a profit the first year, he would enlist in the Army.

With used equipment, a refrigerator, one meat slicer, a freezer and an oven, Jimmy John’s began serving hungry college kids without so much as a menu or outdoor sign. The first restaurant opened in Charleston, Illinois on nearby Eastern Illinois University and cleared $40,000 which was split between the father and son.

After passing out sandwich samples throughout the college town, Liautaud added delivery service, tables, outdoor signs, menu boards and an expanded menu.

From there, Jimmy John’s grew to 10 shops in 1994 to now 2,727 across the U.S. Nearly all Jimmy John’s locations are locally owned and operated, helping create jobs and community partnership opportunities.

A project on the south end of town making progress is the Shops at Cullman, the former Kmart building, which has just landed its third and final tenant — Bargain Hunt.

Tractor Supply Co. and Planet Fitness have recently opened their doors at the new retail complex off Cherokee Avenue and U.S. 31. The city issued a building permit valued at $487,000 to Franklin, Tennessee-based Lee Company to complete construction.

Bargain Hunt is a growing retail chain of 80 stores headquartered in La Vergne, Tennessee, offering Bargain brand name merchandise 30 to 50 percent below retail pricing. According to its website, it opened 20 new stores in 2016 and continued expanding in 2017 with more than 30 new locations.

It’s not clear when Bargain Hunt will officials open for business.
