- A photo made in Montgomery on Wednesday shows Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail to the right of Gov. Kay Ivey, Representatives Randall Shedd, right, and Corey Harbison, left, and Baileyton Mayor Johnny Dyar.
State Sen. Paul Bussman said he stands by his letter calling for Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail to resign over a sexually suggestive Facebook post involving a photo with Alabama’s governor.
“I think the letter speaks for itself,” Bussman told The Times. “I don’t have the authority; he makes that decision. I don’t know how it’s all going to work out, and I’m glad the governor accepted his apology.
“I’ve said what I need to say and I don’t plan to say anymore about it,” he added.
The photo, which Nail posted on Facebook Wednesday afternoon, shows the mayor standing next to Ivey in a group shot in the capitol in Montgomery. Nail is standing so that his right hand and arm is obscured behind Gov. Kay Ivey. In the comments on the Facebook post, a poster asked, “Where is your right hand”
Nail responds, “She did have a smile on her face, didn’t she LOL”
Nail said he later deleted the comment and has apologized to the governor.
Bussman, R-Cullman, sent a letter to media outlets that read:
“I read your inappropriate and disrespectful comments regarding Gov. Ivey with tremendous disbelief. Gov. Ivey has been extremely helpful to your city and this county. Making those comments even between old friends is not acceptable. In my opinion you have caused irreparable damage and have severely compromised our ability to work with the state for the betterment of our citizens. I ask you to resign your position as mayor of Hanceville immediately.”
Nail said he will not resign.
“I thought Senator Bussman was way over the top on this. He has no authority to tell me to resign,” Nail said. “He didn’t even have the courtesy to pick up the phone and call me. I have called Governor Ivey and apologized and she accepted my apology. I made a mistake and I’m sorry for what I did.”
