An Alabama Department of Transportation truck, outfitted with a snow plow, wraps up up pre-treating Alabama 157 with salt at the Cullman County line at Battleground Mountain Friday afternoon.

Cullman County avoided freezing rain and sleet, but early rainfall left some roads potentially hazardous as temperatures made a dramatic drop combined with a biting wind chill.

The temperature dropped from the 40s early in the morning to 32 by early afternoon. The National Weather Service gave a 50 percent chance of snow in the afternoon.

Travel issues were not a factor for the area throughout the day, but there were concerns about roads that are slow to dry.

“Those areas can be treacherous because it’s not going to warm up for a while. Whatever freezes will still be that way by Sunday,” said Phyllis Little, director of the Cullman County Emergency Management Agency.

The overnight low fell to 24, while today’s high will be only 33, followed by a drop to 18 overnight. While Sunday is expected to be sunny, the high will get to about 36, with a low of 22.
