County schools to come together for ‘Grease’

“Grease” is the word in Cullman County schools, as auditions for a county-wide production of the play are approaching.

West Point High School Band Director Ty Parker and Fairview High School theater teacher Mark Dobbs are working together to direct the musical. It will be the first time Cullman County Schools have joined together for a theater production.

“We decided we would work together as a team to try to pull this off,” Parker said.

Auditions for “Grease,” which will be open for every high school student who attends a county school, will be from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Fairview High School auditorium. Any student in grades 9-12 can audition.

A makeup audition day will also be held at a later date for students who have a scheduling conflict.

Parker said West Point and Fairview are the only county schools with theater programs, so the collaborative effort will allow students from other schools to take part in a theater production.

“We’re trying to give all students a chance to participate in musical theater,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of talent at each school.”

Parker said he has already heard from several students who are interested in auditioning.

“I’m hoping we can generate more interest with it being a really popular play like ‘Grease,’” he said.

Parker also thanked Cullman County Schools Superintendent Shane Barnette for approving the idea for the collaboration.

Parker is excited to see all the talent in Cullman County Schools on display on one stage.

And if the play is a success, more county-wide productions could be in the works, Parker said.

“We’re excited to see if this is something we can do in the future,” he said.
