COLD SPRINGS — The Eagles used a balanced offensive effort and a suffocating defensive performance to shut down Winston County 36-23 on Friday night for their first area win of the season.
Hunter McClendon corralled a team-high eight points, while Mason Harris (seven), Dylan Byrd (six), Micah Calvert (five), Carson Garmon (five), Matthew Peed (three) and Adam Hill (two) each played their part for the home squad.
The Blue and Gold also avenged an earlier 37-35 loss to the Yellow Jackets and snapped a 13-game losing streak.
“We played better this time,” coach Tim Willoughby said. “They commit two or three players to defend the low post, and we struggled with it the first game. It gave us a lot of trouble. But we were able to get enough on the perimeter tonight, and we did a good job defensively. They only had six points deep into the third quarter. 2018 has been our year so far (laughs), so maybe we can keep this going.”
% Fairview 63, West Point 58: Cameron Guthrie (18), Bryson Fletcher (17) and Luke Yarbrough (15) all reached double digits for the Aggies in a sensational road and area victory on Friday night.
Fairview (9-8, 2-1) used a 16-4 second frame to secure an eight-point halftime advantage and held off West Point (8-10, 2-1) over the final 16 minutes to get the win.
“When we share the ball, we are hard to beat,” coach Branch Whitlock said. “I’m mostly looking for our guys to compete on both ends every night. We’ve been up and down in those areas. We made some mistakes, but I was proud of our overall effort.”
Coby Sullins tallied 21 points for the Warriors, while Landon Ray and Austin Dubberly had 15 and 11, respectively.
% Holly Pond 74, Susan Moore 47: The Broncos outgunned their area foe 36-11 in the second half to overcome a sluggish start and improve to 4-0 in area play.
McKinley Garrett (21), Kyler Chaney (15), Griffin Morris (11) and Reid Hollis (10) were the top point-getters for Holly Pond, which is now 16-3 on the season.
% Carbon Hill 54, Hanceville 44: The Bulldogs dropped their first area game of the season on Friday night.

% Fairview 51, West Point 42: The Lady Aggies sank clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off the Class 5A No. 8 Lady Warriors for an important area win at Jim Boyd Gymnasium on Friday night.
McKinna Yearwood, Abbi Taylor and Valentina Klocker went perfect from the charity stripe in the last three minutes of the contest — they each hit two — to propel Fairview (13-6, 3-0) to the victory.
Yearwood led the Purple and Gold with 13 points, while Payton Golden (11), Abbi Taylor (10) and Valentina Klocker (nine) also corralled baskets. Taylor and Klocker hauled in nine and seven rebounds, respectively, while Taylor Ann Yeager dished out six points, four assists and four steals as well.
The Lady Aggies also held the Maroon and White scoreless over the final 3:59 of the game.
“Beating West Point in West Point is always a challenge,”coach Mary Hartline said. “Whenever we play them, it’s a game of runs. I challenged the girls to spend more time on free throws, and it paid off tonight. And defensively, that third quarter we let them score 15, which is too much. I was glad we buckled down and forced them into shots they didn’t want to take later in the game.”
