Even as the thermometer climbs well above freezing territory during the daytime, forecasters expect temps to plunge once more before the weekend ends, leaving open a possibility for winter precipitation overnight Sunday.

The Huntsville office of the National Weather Service (NWS) is advising residents of Cullman and other North Alabama counties that a band of moisture may converge with sub-freezing temperatures late Sunday and early Monday morning, opening a window of opportunity for freezing rain that could see light accumulation before melting away in the daytime Monday.

“Light freezing rain will be possible for portions” of northeast Alabama and southern-middle Tennessee during the overnight hours Sunday, NWS said in a Friday afternoon statement. The precipitation is expected to taper and then change over to rain by 8 a.m. Monday.

Accumulation is not expected to be heavy, with NWS anticipating “up to 0.05 inches” on trees and power lines, but little — if any — on most ground surfaces.

Precipitation Sunday evening, says NWS, “may begin as a wintry mix of sleet and snow, mainly east of I-65. At this time little or no accumulation is expected. Rain is then expected through Monday as a weather system moves through the region.”

Following the brief period of freezing rainfall, daytime highs will then begin to rise each day into next week, warming into the 40s and then 50s as the week progresses.
