Gardendale’s Matt Plunkett has accepted an offer to become Cullman’s next head football coach.

The North Jefferson News in Gardendale confirmed the move on Thursday.

The Cullman City Board of Education is scheduled to meet Friday at 8 a.m. to make the hire official.

Plunkett recorded a 37-22 record and four playoff appearances in five seasons with the Class 6A Rockets.

He takes over for longtime coach Mark Britton, who announced his intentions to step down back in September.

He was forced to vacate his position earlier than expected after being diagnosed with kidney cancer, and Mark Stephens, the school’s athletic director, led the team for its final four games of the season.

Britton collected a 134-63 record, three region crowns and zero losing campaigns in 17 seasons with the Black and Gold. He also became the school’s all-time winningest coach in 2013, surpassing Oliver Woodard.
