- Cullman County District Attorney Wilson Blaylock is seen November 2016 at the courthouse.
A grand jury will hear the case of the Christmas Eve shooting death of a Cullman County man, the district attorney said Tuesday.
Logan Trammell, 22, was shot by his father, who according to family members believed his pickup truck was being stolen. The victim’s aunt, Tammy Jacobs, told WIAT last week that Wayne Trammell, the father, was in a shop near the house when he saw someone driving the truck away, exited the shop and shot at the truck.
Cullman County District Attorney Wilson Blaylock said his office has received investigative reports from the Sheriff’s Office, but he anticipates additional details as the investigation continues.
“Once the investigation is completed, we will move forward to a grand jury with the findings,” Blaylock said. “There is not a set time, it just depends on when they finish with their work.”
Jacobs said it was dark when the shooting occurred and her brother, Wayne Trammell, did not realize it was his son or that he was borrowing the truck. She also said her brother fired a warning shot and when the truck did not stop, he fired again.
Asked about when a homeowner is justified in using a gun, Blaylock said, “The law is you can’t use deadly force to protect your property, even if something is being stolen. It’s the law. Under ‘Stand Your Ground’ law you use deadly force if you feel you or your family is being threatened.”
Sheriff’s Office official Brad Williams said Tuesday investigators had not categorized the shooting as accidental.
Logan Trammel was a songwriter and musician, and also worked in construction, according to his obituary. He was pronounced dead at Cullman Regional on Christmas morning.
