Charities are gearing up for today’s National Day of Giving, a post-Thanksgiving event that raises money for charities across the nation and area.

Anyone wanting to contribute to a favorite local charity, for example, can go to United Way of Cullman County’s website at uwaycc.com and click on the giving tab or mail a check to P.O. Box 116, Cullman, AL 35056.

“We invest every donation in local programs, giving donors the opportunity to support 16 agencies with one gift. Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for Cullman residents to kick-off the giving season and make a difference by supporting United Way agencies” said Becky Goff, assistant director of United Way of Cullman County.

Charities across the nation take to Facebook and Twitter to get attention for a last effort in the year to bring money into charities in local communities through the National Day of Giving.

United Way has 16 local charities under its umbrella.

Other organizations, such as The Link of Cullman County, participate to raise money for programs or services that benefit local residents.

Those who want to make donations can also choose college foundations, church or mission organizations, or to give to blood banks.

Donations to the local United Way will be dispersed by a group of local volunteers who review the needs of local groups that serve the public, Goff added.
