All money and food donated during The Times’ annual food drive benefit the food bank at Cullman Caring for Kids.

The need to stock the shelves at the food bank remains high as local families are relying on the service to weather difficult economic circumstances. The non-profit Cullman Caring for Kids, a United Way agency, reports the food bank has been seeing 650 families per month, sometimes more.

“We’ve seen an increase of people in need of food to care for their children and families,” said Javon Daniel, director of Cullman Caring for Kids. “Each year we have seen a tremendous outpouring of kindness from the local community in an effort to help others in Cullman County. We see increases in the need at different times of the year, and this is one of those times with the holidays upon us.”

Donations of non-perishable food and cash will be accepted at The Times until 5 p.m. Friday.

Daniel said each dollar donated will purchase seven pounds of food. For example, $100 will provide 700 pounds.

Cullman High School students delivered a check to The Times for more than $4,200 this week for the food drive. East Elementary School students have also donated food and money to the food drive. Several other donations have been provided since the drive began.

The Times, at 300 Fourth Avenue SE, is open  8 a.m.-5 p.m. today through Friday.
