The St. Bernard senior claimed a phenomenal time of 16:02 during his respective competition at the state cross country meet at Oakville Indian Mounds to ease ahead of a talented field en route to an individual title and new 1A-2A record — previously set by Cold Springs’ Nathan Lewis (16:07) in 2009.

Not only that, but the UAH commit solidified his rightful place in program history by wrapping up his last season with the Saints riding a seven-race winning streak.

Let’s go ahead and make Sweeney The Times’ Athlete of the Week.

Leahrose Mami didn’t let her male counterpart have all the fun, however.

The St. Bernard senior also took home the individual crown in the 1A-2A race following a time of 19:24. Mami produced six consecutive wins on the trails to close out her final campaign with the Lady Saints.

Caleb Guthery collected All-State accolades with a 15th-place finish in the 1A-2A race as well.

Athlete of the Week, which is sponsored by Mitch Smith Chevrolet, is currently open to basketball and football athletes. Nominations are encouraged and can be submitted to jwinfrey@cullmantimes.com with the athlete’s name, school and statistics/accomplishments. The deserving candidate with the best résumé will walk away with the crown for that week.
