ADDISON — Addison used the big play to dominate Hubbertville 45-13 in Thursday night’s first-round playoff tilt.

The Class 1A, No. 8 Bulldogs (9-2) overwhelmed the Lions (3-7) thanks in large part to extraordinary outings from Tyler Borden, who toted the ball nine times for 189 yards and three touchdowns, and Zayne Guthrie, who secured 185 total yards and three touchdowns from his quarterback position.

Addison, which snapped the ball on offense just 32 times in the victory, had scoring plays of 16, 24, 29, 40, 49, 65 and 84 yards — much to the delight of head coach David Smothers.

“If we didn’t have those, who knows what it would have been,” he said. “We didn’t sustain very much. But you just don’t ever know. Maybe we sustain some drives if we didn’t have those long ones. They sure were fun to watch in the game, though. It’s always nice to get the win in the playoffs. Hubbertville has a good team that plays with a lot of heart. I’m proud of the kids tonight.”

Hubbertville delivered a 12-play drive to open the meeting but coughed up a fumble inside the 10-yard line, which was recovered by Guthrie — the junior then corralled an 84-yard touchdown run two plays later to hand the home team an early 6-0 advantage.

Borden (65-yard touchdown run) and Luke Chambers (24-yard touchdown catch) racked up scores in the second quarter to help the Bulldogs build an 18-0 halftime lead.

Chambers corralled a 16-yard touchdown toss from Guthrie on Addison’s first possession of the third quarter, and Borden sprinkled in a pair of scoring dashes (49 and 29 yards) later in the outing to counter the Lions, who put up all their points in the second half using 14-play and 11-play drives, respectively.

“Replicating what they do is so hard to do,” Smothers admitted. “A lot of times, it can take our kids a few series to get going. They had some turnovers that helped us, but I wouldn’t say we played well on defense tonight.”

Braxton Preuitt wrapped up the offensive fireworks with a 40-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter.

Hubbertville’s Daniel Holliday had 108 yards and two touchdowns on a game-high 29 carries.

Chambers, meanwhile, finished his night with four catches for 64 yards. Gage Gilliland also snagged a pass from Guthrie — who earned 121 rushing yards and completed 4-of-7 tosses through the air — on a 2-point conversion.

Addison travels to Hackleburg, which defeated Woodville 49-19, next week. The Panthers are 10-1 this season.

“I don’t have a clue about them,” Smother said. “They’re probably really, really good. It’ll be just like normal for us, though. We’ll prepare and get ready to play football.”
