- Holly Pond's Defense
The Times’ Athlete of the Week honor is typically bestowed to one particular standout.
This week, however, things are a bit different … and for good reason.
Not only did Holly Pond snap a 10-game losing streak to Fairview last Friday night, but it did so in dominant fashion.
The Broncos roared to an 18-6 win versus the Aggies behind a tremendous defensive performance — they allowed just 126 yards of offense, recorded five sacks and forced five turnovers — en route to earning their first victory over the Purple and Gold since the 2006 season.
The Green and White had entered the contest having been outscored 461-112 in the past 10 meetings.
Gabe Fortner (seven tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery), Alex Corneglio (4.5 tackles, two sacks and one pass breakup), Jordan Quick (five tackles, two forced fumbles and one sack), Jordan McCormick (eight tackles), Isaac Ludwig (5.5 tackles, one pass breakup and a fumble recovery), Colyn Cofield (five tackles), Levi Boatright (3.5 tackles and one forced fumble), Kyle Sellers (four tackles and one forced fumble), Kyler Chaney (five tackles and an interception), Tyler Boatright (four tackles and one sack), Luis Garcia (three tackles and two pass breakups), Tyler Suryono (1.5 tackles and one sack) and Brody Rowell (an interception) were the solid contributors for the Broncos.
Jeremiah Holmes claimed a 13-yard touchdown run (Rowell added a 2-point conversion), and Chaney hit Corneglio on a 39-yard scoring connection (Rowell claimed another 2-point conversion) to provide the offense for the Green and White.
Athlete of the Week, which is sponsored by Mitch Smith Chevrolet, is currently open to basketball, football and cross country athletes. Nominations are encouraged and can be submitted to jwinfrey@cullmantimes.com with the person’s name, school and statistics/accomplishments. The deserving candidate with the best résumé will walk away with the crown for that week.
