- Cullman’s Will Morrison (left) and Michael Myers (right) recently pledged their commitments to Wallace State and Snead State, respectively.
Cullman’s Will Morrison and Michael Myers have no plans to hang up the cleats following graduation.
The talented pitchers recently announced their respective collegiate commitments — Morrison to Wallace State and Myers to Snead State — months ahead of their senior seasons with the Bearcats, who have ripped off four straight trips to the state championship series in Montgomery.
Morrison notched a 10-1 record with 77 strikeouts, an 0.87 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP in 72 1/3 innings last season, including three shutouts and a no-hitter — the second of his career.
The right-hander, who originally planned to attend Mississippi State, tallied All-State (second-team pitcher) and All-Area (Pitcher of the Year) honors after his phenomenal junior campaign. He was also named a High School All-American (first-team pitcher) by Collegiate Baseball in addition to his North-South All-Star selection.
“I’ve been committed to Mississippi State since I was in the 10th grade,” Morrison said. “Things just didn’t work out there. It was a shock and a disappointment, but I trusted in God. I think He’s leading me to Wallace State to play baseball. My goal is to get back to the SEC. I want to play for as long as I can. I made my decision now so I’d be able to enjoy playing with my friends and being the best pitcher I can be on the mound.”
Myers should receive an increased workload next spring before becoming a member of the Parsons.
He completed 33 1/3 innings for the Black and Gold last season, allowing 30 hits and striking out 30 batters for a strong 1.26 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. He finished with a 4-0 record and walked just four hitters.
“I visited there a couple of months ago,” Myers said. “They treated me well, stayed in touch. It’s a good school. They seem to fit me. I’m pretty excited to go there. Glad I committed. Get to see Kade (Williams) again.”
Cullman coach Brent Patterson, who’s no stranger to witnessing impressive talent, couldn’t be happier for both Morrison and Myers — though he might be more excited to have them back for an additional season.
“Will has a proven track record,” he said. “He’s a winner. Wallace State is getting a guy who’s proven and really knows how to pitch. He’s got a high ceiling. Those guys down there are really thankful to have a player like Will come into their program. Michael has been very good for us, too. He doesn’t have crazy skills like other people, but he knows how to pitch, how to keep the ball out of the middle of the plate and how to change speeds. He is a quiet worker who can eat innings. You know what you’re going to get from him.
“Both Will and Michael are kids you love to have in your program.”
