City OKs new fire truck, five police vehicles

Five new Cullman Police vehicles will soon hit the streets followed by a new fire engine next fall with the Cullman City Council approving nearly $930,000 in public safety spending Monday.

The police department will get four Chevrolet Tahoes, the default patrol vehicle, along with a Chevrolet 4×4 crew cab truck from Donohoo Chevrolet for $154,709, which was budgeted. The fire department will have to wait until October 2018 for its E-One Pumper from Sunbelt Fire, which will cost up to $650,000, budgeted in fiscal 2019.

The city also approved purchasing five heart monitors from Zoll Medical LTD, a sole source provider, for $125,000, which is budgeted, for the fire department.

In other business Monday, the Cullman City Council:

Approved Oct. 9 meeting minutes.

Held public hearing and approved vacating and declaring surplus Hickory Avenue Southwest between Sixth and Seventh streets Southwest, with positive recommendation from Cullman Planning Commission.

Approved request from Edith Smith of Christmas Love and Cullman Caring for Kids for a special events permit to hold the annual car show in Depot Park from 8 a.m.- 3 p.m., Nov. 11.

Approved request from Dennis Berse of the Cullman Downtown Merchants Association for a special events permit to hold a Veteran’s Day Celebration on Nov. 10-11 in downtown Cullman.

Approved resolution in support of November being Alzheimer’s disease Awareness Month in Cullman.

Held second reading and approved of ordinance to participate in the 2018 Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday from 12:01 a.m. Feb. 24- midnight, Feb.26.
