County proclaims October Domestic Violence Awareness Month

- On Tuesday, the Cullman County Commission proclaimed October Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In 2016, there were 450 domestic violence incidents reported across Cullman County, including five rapes, 15 aggravated assaults and 430 simple assaults.

Across Alabama, there were 43 homicides, 238 rapes, 95 robberies, 4,235 aggravated assaults and 34,444 simple assaults related to domestic violence.
One in four women will experience domestic violence at some point during their lifetimes, and, on average, three women are killed each day at the hands of a current or former intimate partner, according to Victim Services of Cullman.
On Tuesday, the Cullman County Commission proclaimed October Domestic Violence Awareness Month, joining the City of Cullman which made a similar proclamation last week.

In other business Tuesday, the Cullman County Commission:
- Approved Sept. 28 meeting minutes, expenditures, payroll, requisitions and all journal entries to be posted.
- Proclaimed celebration of Hopewell Baptist Church’s 175th Anniversary.
- Announced employee and retiree deduction for health insurance for 2018.
- Ratified the City of Cullman’s $14 million tax abatement for Royal Technologies for building and machinery related to industrial expansion.
- Approved pre-application for fiscal 2018 funding for Cullman Regional Airport.
- Authorized County Attorney Chad Floyd to file civil complaint against delinquent sanitation account holders.
- Granted authority to Chairman Kenneth Walker to sign a consent order in Cullman County Circuit Court related to a civil suit involving unpaid sales tax. Floyd said the county has reached an agreement with a defendant related to unpaid sales tax.
- Adopted the updated CARTS Standard Operating Procedure Guidelines Handbook.
- Authorized Chairman Walker to sign an agreement with the Department of Examiners of Public Accounts for the audit for the period of Oct. 1, 2015 through Sept. 30, 2016 for $14,484.
- Authorized Walker and EMA Director to sign a memorandum of understanding between City of Cullman Parks & Recreation Department and Cullman County EMA, related to use of the Cullman Civic Center in disaster situations.
- Authorized the signing of a mapping software agreement with ESRI for the Appraisal Department and payment of $50,000 for annual usage .
- Appointed Kristi Nyqust to the Wellstone Mental Health 310 Board for a seven-year term to expire April 1, 2019.
- Appointed Rita Nicholas to the Wellstone Mental Health 310 Board for a term to expire April 1, 2021.
- Appointed Shirley Arnett to the Wellstone Mental Health 310 Board for a term to expire April 1, 2023.
- Approved $12,157 for repairs to pool at Smith Lake Park.
- Approved purchase of a 2011 Ford F-150 from ADECA Surplus for the Road Department for $9,500.
- Extended bid for traffic striping to J.C. Cheek.
- The Cullman County Commission will hold a work session 8:30 a.m. Nov. 14, followed by its meeting at 10 a.m.
