Substitute nurses at Cullman County Schools will make more money after the Cullman County School Board recently approved a pay raise to $100 per day.

Substitute nurses previously made the same rate as a substitute teacher, $60 per day, but the nurses require a nursing degree to work, Superintendent Shane Barnette said.

He said the amount paid in Cullman County is also less than what surrounding school systems pay their substitute nurses, so the pay raise is needed to try and keep them in the area instead of looking elsewhere.

Barnette also congratulated the system’s transportation department for their efforts in maintaining the county’s school buses.

Having 10 percent of a bus fleet with deficiencies is considered excellent, but out of the 147 buses used across Cullman County, none have deficiencies, Barnette said.

With only six employees in the department, it’s a great job for them to keep the buses in such great condition, he said.
