St. Bernard’s Leahrose Mami and Andrew Sweeney blitzed their respective fields to claim individual titles during Thursday’s Hay of a Run at Fairview Town Park.

Mami turned in a speedy time of 20:31.41 to garner her second straight victory, while Sweeney claimed his third consecutive triumph following an impressive 17:04.54 effort.

Eva Barck (ninth), Liz Medina (10th), Claire Sanders (11th) and Anna Beth Guthery (13th) provided tremendous times as well for St. Bernard’s girls, who placed eight points ahead of Jasper for the team title. Fairview finished third overall, while Holly Pond rounded out the six-squad field with a fourth-place outing.

The Lady Aggies earned stellar contributions from Alex McDonald (second), Carrington Chambers (14th), Alyssa Harper (16th), Kennedy Chambers (19th) and Emma Gardner (20th), while the Lady Broncos were led by Abigail Kusz (third), Camilla Chambers (fourth), Breanna Tankersley (21st), Maritza Ramon (24th) and Madison Frnka (30th). Good Hope’s top runners were Bijou Phillips (fifth), Addie Stripling (23rd) and Isabella Edgeworth (47th).

In the end, though, it was Mami who stole the show.

And the senior couldn’t be happier about it.

“I started out kind of slow this season,” she said. “In my opinion, it was kind of bad. But I’m starting to run better. It’s been more mental for me this year. I started out bad and thought I’d be bad all year. Lately, though, I’ve only been thinking positive. These past two meets have kind of helped me out.”

Sweeney, meanwhile, built on solid races at the Kudzu Invitational and Jesse Owens Classic with another stout showing — this time among a group of 133 runners.

“This season has been going very well,” the senior said. “I’m very happy with my progress so far. I am, however, ready for some cooler weather. I’m tired of running out here with a heavy shirt. But right now, I feel like I can run and compete with anybody heading into state.”

Caleb Guthery (fourth), Joey McCarthy (11th), Joseph Arriaga (12th) and Francis Mami (22nd) helped Sweeney and the Saints finish in second place … just two points back of the Purple and Gold.

The host Aggies — behind a third-place outing from Quinton Chambers — bested last year’s champion thanks in part to speedy times by A.B. Diaz (seventh), Keagan Hardin (eighth), Cody Fallin (10th) and Peyton Bailey (20th).

With several important meets around the corner, it was certainly an apt time for Fairview’s first win of the season.

“We’re looking for more,” Chambers said. “Our workouts have really been helping us, and our coaches have only been pushing us. We’ve come a long way. I think we’ve got a chance to win this year’s county meet and be really successful down the road.”

Holly Pond, which placed fifth of out nine squads, was paced by Conner Lowery (fifth), Zackery Reynolds (ninth), Parker Sellers (21st), Charlie Huddleston (32nd) and Seth Self (42nd).

Hanceville, which led seventh, was paced by Aaron Brown (second), Austin Martinez (35th), Noah Frasier (54th), Allen Jones (79th) and Chandler Lane (83rd).

Good Hope’s quickest participants were Logan Self (40th), Oscar Merano (49th), Matt Self (52nd), Carson Smith (67th) and Colton Lindsey (84th).

St. Bernard’s ninth annual Oktoberfest Invitational is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21.

Addison, Cullman, Fairview, Holly Pond, St. Bernard and West Point are among the area squads set to take part in the star-studded event.
