PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Playoff talk heats up for local squads in Week 6 matchups
Published 6:00 pm Thursday, October 5, 2017
- Cullman’s Jayden Sullins rips off a run against Fayette County during last week’s 37-34 home win.
Not only does Week 6 provide an exceptional selection of games, but it also marks the unofficial start of postseason chatter.
As it stands, all nine teams in The Times’ coverage area remain eligible for postseason play — no program has corralled its playoff spot or been completely eliminated within its respective region.
Look for that to change sooner rather than later … perhaps as early as tonight.
Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, however, remains to be seen.
Before we begin our terrific discussion, though, don’t forget to cast your vote in “The People’s Pick,” a series of Twitter polls posted on my timeline (@winfreyjake) each and every Tuesday afternoon.
Let’s make some picks, shall we?
% Decatur Heritage (5-0, 2-0 in Class 1A, Region 7) at Addison (4-2, 2-1 in Class 1A, Region 7): The Bulldogs tried very hard to fight through injuries and tepid play last week, but they simply couldn’t overcome Vinemont.
And, for just the third time in coach David Smothers’ tenure, Addison has lost consecutive games.
The Eagles, on the other hand, are soaring high, having mixed in three close wins with a pair of blowout victories.
I like my history … and that history tells me Addison hasn’t lost three straights contests since 2009, which also marks the last time the program hasn’t made the postseason.
I’m not ready to give up on Smothers and Co. just yet — even if they have an abundance of injuries.
I’ll take Addison in a CLOSE one.
% Jake’s Pick: Addison
% People’s Pick: Addison (66 percent, 95 votes)
% West End (1-4, 0-3 in Class 2A, Region 7) at Cold Springs (1-4, 0-2 in Class 2A, Region 7): Neither of these squads is trending in the right direction.
The Eagles are having trouble scoring and defending, while the Patriots aren’t much better at either.
Cold Springs has a six-point win against Berry, while West End has a two-point win against Susan Moore.
Susan Moore is better than Berry, and the Patriots’ offense is better than the Eagles’ offense.
Using that math, I’m going with the road team.
% Jake’s Pick: West End
% People’s Pick: West Point (59 percent, 92 votes)
% Cullman (4-2, 2-1 in Class 6A, Region 7) at Pell City (3-2, 2-0 in Class 6A, Region 7): If this year’s tilt between these two programs is anything like 2016, then expect some fireworks tonight at Pete Rich-Alumni Stadium.
The Bearcats overcame an 18-point deficit last season to pull out a 25-24 win versus the Panthers — and I have to believe the home team has had this one circled on the calendar since the clock struck zero at Oliver Woodard Stadium.
In the end, though, I fully expect Cullman to come out on top.
Here’s why.
Pell City’s three victories have come against teams with a combined 6-10 mark. Additionally, the Panthers have played just one team — Gardendale — with a winning record so far this season, which resulted in 53-7 home loss.
I expect the Bearcats to play awfully hard for coach Mark Britton tonight and notch the region win, which could set them up for a first-round playoff game at home down the road.
% Jake’s Pick: Cullman
% People’s Pick: Cullman (78 percent, 105 votes)
% Good Hope (3-2, 1-2 in Class 4A, Region 6) at Winfield (3-2, 1-1 in Class 4A, Region 6): Stay with me for a moment.
Good Hope beat Hamilton, which beat Haleyville, which beat Winfield, which beat Cordova, which beat Good Hope.
Still with me?
The Raiders’ region offers more questions than answers at this point in time, but the Red and White can make a statement tonight with a road win over the Pirates.
Will that happen? I haven’t the foggiest idea.
Other than a 50-18 loss to Hale County, Winfield’s defense has been solid.
Good Hope, meanwhile, has pitched a couple of shutouts and has produced at least 22 points in four of its five games.
I just flipped a quarter.
% Jake’s Pick: Winfield
% People’s Pick: Winfield (52 percent, 90 votes)
% Susan Moore (1-4, 0-2 in Class 3A, Region 6) at Hanceville (1-5, 0-3 in Class 3A, Region 6): Let’s discuss two schools in desperate need of a win.
The Purple and Gold have gone winless and have been outscored 203-38 since a 36-20 Week 0 triumph versus Cold Springs on the road, while the visiting Bulldogs have had trouble closing out close games— Susan Moore has already lost by one and two points so far this season.
While I don’t know which team goes home happy, I do know that I can’t back Hanceville again until it shows me a bit more out on the football field.
The opportunity awaits tonight at Ray Tally Stadium.
% Jake’s Pick: Susan Moore
% People’s Pick: Susan Moore (62 percent, 90 votes)
% Locust Fork (2-4, 2-1 in Class 3A, Region 6) at Holly Pond (4-1, 1-1 in Class 3A, Region 6): These Broncos just keep showing out week after week.
Not only would win here go a long way toward helping Holly Pond secure a playoff spot, but it would also help the team earn its best start to a season since 2004, when the Green and White opened the year with six straight triumphs.
The difference here could be these two offenses.
The Broncos are averaging 34.4 points per game, while the Hornets are mustering 23.4 points per game.
Locust Fork won 37-31 last season, but I think the home team dishes out some payback this time around.
% Jake’s Pick: Holly Pond
% People’s Pick: Holly Pond (61 percent, 96 votes)
% Vinemont (2-3, 1-2 in Class 3A, Region 6) at Priceville (0-5, 0-3 in Class 4A, Region 8): The Eagles collected another come-from-behind victory last week and enter tonight’s non-region clash with tons of momentum.
Vinemont — in my humble opinion — shouldn’t have an issue here.
The Bulldogs have been outscored 228-40 in five blowout losses this season and have lost 18 consecutive matchups dating back to Week 9 of the 2015 campaign.
Coach Stephen Robinson and Co. put together a strong performance and pick up the road victory.
% Jake’s Pick: Vinemont
% People’s Pick: Vinemont (56 percent, 95 votes)
% West Point (3-2, 2-1 in Class 5A, Region 6) at Fairview (2-2, 0-2 in Class 5A, Region 6): Visit www.cullmantimes.com or check out Thursday’s print edition for a complete preview of this matchup.
