A Cullman woman will soon open a new location for the charity, Curt’s Closet, she founded to honor her son, a 15-year-old Cullman High student who died tragically in a May car wreck.
On Tuesday, the Cullman Planning Commission approved a conditional use request allowing Ashley Wilson to use the Voice of Victory church building on St. Joseph Street Northwest as a donation site for Curt’s Closet. Ashley Wilson, mother of the late Curt Wilson, started the charity to collect items like clothes and backpacks for local children for school.
Curt Wilson died in the three-vehicle wreck on County Road 222 on May 7 that also injured his mother and sent a Cullman man to UAB Hospital with severe injuries. The wreck remains under investigation, and a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the driver, Bradford Meeks, that collided head-on with the Wilsons.
In July, Ashley Wilson founded Curt’s Closet as a way to give back to the community and help local children and families that may struggle to get everything they need for school. Items that may be donated include new or gently used clothing and shoes (sizes to fit children ages 5-18), lunch boxes, and backpacks.
According to the Curt’s Closet website, the goal is to have a huge selection of items for families to come pick out their “new” items for school in July 2018.
In approving the conditional use variance Monday, the planning commission noted that donated items must be kept inside the building.
