- City schools staying inside during eclipse
Cullman City Schools will be in session during the solar eclipse on Monday, but students will not be allowed outside to see it.
In a recorded phone call to the families of students, Superintendent Susan Patterson announced that all Cullman City Schools would stay inside during the eclipse, but parents and guardians have the option to take their students out of class to see it away from school property.
Cullman High School Principal Kim Hall said the decision was mainly made for safety reasons.
The schools don’t have glasses to safely view the eclipse, and if they did buy them for students, there are a lot of questions about whether some glasses will provide the proper protection, she said.
This way, students will stay safe, and if families have their own glasses, they will have the option to watch it themselves, Hall said.
“We’re just going to leave that decision up to the parents,” she said.
Hall said students who are in school during the eclipse will be able to watch it in their classrooms on an internet livestream, but no one on campus will be outside to watch it.
