City school board recognizes PALS winners, welcomes new teachers

- East Elementary School welcomes two new teachers Nina Jones, who will teach sixth grade, and Kelly Thrasher, who will teach special education.
The Cullman City Board of Education recognized its schools for winning awards for their clean campuses and new teachers at East Elementary.
The school board, Cullman City Primary School and West Elementary School each won a 2017 Beautification Award from the Cullman County PALS Committee. The primary school also took home the first-place 2017 PALS Clean Campus Award and East Elementary placed second.
Two new East Elementary teachers were also welcomed at Tuesday’s board meeting. Nina Jones is a sixth-grade teacher and Kelly Thrasher is a special education teacher. West Elementary also has a new employee with Alice Lindsey, who is a special education instructional assistant at the school.
In other business Tuesday, the Cullman City Board of Education:
- Recognized Dr. Richard Templeton who was chosen to serve as director of the Alabama Council of Administrators of Special Education on the CLAS Board of Directors for 2017-2018.
- Approved meeting minutes from July 24 and Aug. 2.
- Approved July payroll of $1,808,823.85, invoices paid of $551,018.60, financial statements and bank reconciliations.
- Approved agenda.
- Approved the following Head Start items: July expenditures report.
- Approved surplus/salvage three small electric ceramic kilns, six kiln shelves, and 50 small kiln shelf posts from the Art Department at Cullman High School.
- Approved surplus/salvage the following unused books at Cullman High School: 10th U.S. History, The Americans (Red) 2006 ISBN 618377190, 313 copies; 11th U.S. History, The Americans (Blue) 2006, ISBN 618377247, 250 copies; and AP History, American Pagent 2006, ISBN 618479406, 139 copies.
- Approved salvage the following from West Elementary School: Orion VHS, two Sanyo box televisions, Dell tower and keyboard, Brother HL22 printer, and HP printer.
- Approved revised Board Policy 3.10.4 Salary Deductions. This item was brought back from the Policy Review Committee for consideration.
- Approved revised facility rental fees at Cullman High School.
- Approved revised Head Start Disabilities Assistant. This item will be sent out to Policy Review and brought back for consideration.
- Approved Memorandum of Understandings between the Department of Early Childhood Education of the State of Alabama and Cullman City Schools for the First Class PreK Grants for Cullman City Head Start PreK #1, PreK #2, and PreK #3 fro June 15 through Sept. 2018.
- Approved Cullman High School contracting with 31 North Football Officials Associations, Inc. to referee the home football games during the 2017 season.
- Approved contracting with with Birmingham Holocaust Education Center to host the Holocaust Exhibit at Cullman High School for Cullman City Schools and the Cullman community on Feb. 2-16, 2018.
- Approved the following personnel considerations:
- Transfer: Shannon Fondren, from Special Education teacher at East Elementary School to Access/ELL teacher at Cullman High School, beginning Aug. 7.
- Leave of Absence: Brandi Outzen, instructional assistant at Cullman City Primary School, requests Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) beginning Aug. 30 through Oct. 2.
- The next board meeting will be 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 in the Central Office Board Room. The second FY-2018 budget hearing will be held at 4:30 p.m. prior to the regular meeting.
