2nd Fridays back and bigger

Local artist Laura Walker, center, spent the July 2nd Fridays greeting crowds (and making people laugh) at her Artists’ Alley booth.

The summer may be winding down on 2nd Fridays, but for organizers of the monthly First Avenue block party, that just means the best is yet to come.

When the roads close at 4 p.m. Friday for the August installment of 2nd Fridays, there’ll be new additions to the event’s ever-growing list of attractions, activities and vendors.

As the festival extends its reach beyond First Avenue into surrounding city blocks, look for the rock painting-and-hiding party at the Cullman County Public Library’s Bookmobile, near the Buffalo Wild Wings Kids’ Zone.

Or come back for the second installment of the Artists’ Alley gallery, located behind the future home of Mae’s Food Hall, which features works from local painters, sculptors and craftsmen.

Two stages will host musical entertainment, with Sam Edwards and Mike Smith on one, and Round 2 on the other. Or drop by Karma’s, where local singer-songwriter Shannon McNeal will perform from 7-9 p.m.

And, as always, the antique and classic car cruise-in will all but guarantee a crowd. With pedestrian-only street traffic all the way from U.S. Highway 278 to Arnold Street at Cullman’s Depot Park, classic cars will form a picturesque backdrop while guests mingle.
