Smith Lake drowning victim, 16, identified as Mississippi teen

ARLEY — A 16-year-old boy who drowned in Smith Lake Saturday evening has been identified as a Monroe County, Mississippi student.
The teen was swimming off a boat dock at a private residence in Arley when the drowning occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, said Trooper Johnathan Appling.
The victim’s football coach, Chris Craven, identified him as Thomas Lee Bales, a student at Oak Hill Academy in West Point, Mississippi. Bales was reportedly swimming with a youth group. Craven posted the following on Facebook:
A prayer vigil was held Saturday at Oak Hill Academy’s football field. Bales played football for the OHA Raiders. Prayer requests for Bales’ family circulated on Facebook feeds Saturday evening.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has released no other details about the incident, and it remains under investigation.
