- Vinemont resident Kim Smith, standing right, tells the Cullman County Commission Tuesday concerns she and neighbors have about proposed plans to locate a new trucking company on County Road 1285.
Vinemont residents turned out to Tuesday’s Cullman County Commission meeting to voice their concerns over a proposed plan to locate a trucking company in their community.
According to local resident Kim Smith, Wootten Logistics is planning to open for business on County Road 1285, which would require the county to widen the narrow road for 18-wheelers to travel.
A call left with Wootten Logistics seeking comment Tuesday afternoon wasn’t immediately returned.
Smith said residents were led to believe the county had already agreed to widen the road and make improvements — a point they took issue with — but Chairman Kenneth Walker said no agreement had been reached with the company.
“This is first I’ve heard about this,” Walker said.
Associate Commissioner Garry Marchman said he did speak with the company president, Zach Wootten, about crews trimming back trees from the roadway.
Resident Ed Taylor, a father of two sons who will soon be driving age, said he had concerns about the truck traffic on the narrow roadway, especially since two school buses travel it to pick up and drop off students.
“I’m wondering how 18-wheelers are going to get down that road when we have to let one vehicle at a time go by,” Taylor said. “And if that road is widened, it will need drainage.”
Wooten Logistics is a family-owned company that operates a fleet of temperature-controlled trailers, flatbeds, and owner operators, according to its website.
In an unrelated measure, the county commission approved signing off on a disaster assistance agreement to build a community safe room/storm shelter at the Stony Lonesome OHV Park that would accommodate 187 people.
The county received a grant that would require a $42,425 local match which Walker said will include in-kind work performed by the county.
