- Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry confirms homeowner shot and killed along with suspected assailant around 5 p.m. Monday, by another occupant inside the home on Eva Road. Names of victims were not being released, as of 10 p.m. Monday.
A shooting Monday afternoon has left a Cullman County homeowner and his assailant dead, according to Sheriff Matt Gentry.
The shooting occurred on County Road 1301 after 5 p.m., Gentry said in a press conference just before 10 p.m. Monday at the Kelley Community Center on Eva Road, near where the incident occurred.
Gentry did not release the name of the homeowner or the name of the assailant. He said another occupant at the residence killed the attacker, but did not specify how.
“We are going to be limited on details because it is an active, ongoing investigation,” Gentry said. “What I can confirm is that, this afternoon, at approximately a little after 5 p.m., we had a homeowner who was shot and killed at a residence located in Cullman County.
“The individual who shot and killed that [assailant] individual was also killed by another occupant at the residence, and at this time my heart and my prayers go out to the family. And that’s all we’re going to release right now.”
The sheriff’s office characterized the homicide as an isolated incident and said there should be no ongoing threat to residents in the vicinity of the crime scene.
The sheriff’s office also indicated it would offer no further official comment on the incident until Tuesday at the earliest.
Attempts to contact Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick by phone late Monday were not successful.
